The P.A.S.T. is Present Investigations: Fort Simcoe State Park
Fort Simcoe State Park is a Washington State Day Use Park located approximately 8 miles west of White Swan, Washington on the Yakama Indian Nation.
Prior to the 1850's the location served as a camping ground and trading area for the federated bands of the Yakama Indians and other tribes as well.
In the 1850's the United States Army erected the fort to house troops to watch over the Yakama Indians during the Indian Wars. It was built and commanded by General Robert S. Garnett of the United States Army. (Mr. Garnett would later become a well known Civil War General.) General Garnett led the fort for approximately three years until his wife and infant child died there of illness. He escorted their bodies back across the United States and did not return to lead the fort, leaving it to other army leaders.
In approximately 1859 the United States Army turned the approximate 200 acre fort to the Yakima Indian Agency who converted it to an Indian School. The Yakama Indian Agency managed the affairs until the early 1900's.
The State of Washington established a park at the site in 1956. Several of the Officers Buildings still stand and have been renovated with availability to the public. The original barracks, block houses and brink no longer exist but have been replicas have been rebuilt for the public to view.
